Walking Tour of Greenwich Village

Begin at Washington Square Park at Waverly Place and Fifth Avenue for a walking tour of shops, architecture and sights in one of Manhattan’s most historic areas, including the current hotspot, the Meatpacking District. Visit a popular old speakeasy, Chumley’s on Morton Street, still popular with Village literati, drop in at one of Dylan Thomas’s favorite watering holes, the famous White Horse Tavern, and catch a meal at Tutta Pasta on Carmine Street for low prices and out-of-this-world pasta.

Undiscovered Delights

Skyscraper Museum (39 Battery Place, 212-968-1961) —Worth visiting for the physical space alone, it features the work of pioneers like Frank Lloyd Wright and the original model for the World Trade Center.

TOP OF THE ROCK (1-877-NYC-ROCK; www.topoftherocknyc.com)—This newly renovated observation deck, opened November 1st, 2005, on the 70th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, offers a view of the city like no other, unobstructed for 360 degrees for miles in every direction.

United Nations (46th St & 1st Ave, 212-963-8687) —Guided tours are offered every half hour and the inexpensive Delegates’ Dining Room (with a fabulous view of the East River) is often open to the public. There’s also a wonderful gift shop that offers crafts from all over the world.

Riverside Park (72nd St & Riverside Dr)—One of the most picturesque corners of Manhattan with exceptional architecture and sweeping views of the Hudson River. A bronze sculpture of Eleanor Roosevelt, one of only four statues of women in NY parks, graces the entrance. Eat alfresco at the relaxed café and enjoy the views.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Eastern Parkway, 718-623-7200) —The Japanese gardens alone are worth a visit, especially when the cherry trees bloom in the spring.
