Walking Tour of the Upper West Side

If you're traveling with children you shouldn't miss the American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th street. This huge museum displays two percent of its massive 32 million piece collection at any given time. After you explore the museum, save time and eat at the museum food court inside—unlike most museum food, this food court has delicious salads, sandwiches, ethnic dishes, and great dessert! After leaving the museum take a stroll along Columbus Avenue and shop at some of the best designer boutiques in the world. Continue down Columbus Avenue to 65th street where Broadway swerves to meet you and rest your feet while watching a show at Lincoln Center. Walk south down Broadway to the south-western corner of Central Park towards Columbus Circle, where you can eat at the Porter House New York steakhouse or do more shopping at the upscale stores. If you still have energy left, visit the Jazz Hall of Fame to end the day on a high note.

Undiscovered Delights

Skyscraper Museum (39 Battery Place, 212-968-1961) —Worth visiting for the physical space alone, it features the work of pioneers like Frank Lloyd Wright and the original model for the World Trade Center.

TOP OF THE ROCK (1-877-NYC-ROCK; www.topoftherocknyc.com)—This newly renovated observation deck, opened November 1st, 2005, on the 70th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, offers a view of the city like no other, unobstructed for 360 degrees for miles in every direction.

United Nations (46th St & 1st Ave, 212-963-8687) —Guided tours are offered every half hour and the inexpensive Delegates’ Dining Room (with a fabulous view of the East River) is often open to the public. There’s also a wonderful gift shop that offers crafts from all over the world.

Riverside Park (72nd St & Riverside Dr)—One of the most picturesque corners of Manhattan with exceptional architecture and sweeping views of the Hudson River. A bronze sculpture of Eleanor Roosevelt, one of only four statues of women in NY parks, graces the entrance. Eat alfresco at the relaxed café and enjoy the views.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Eastern Parkway, 718-623-7200) —The Japanese gardens alone are worth a visit, especially when the cherry trees bloom in the spring.

Madison Square Park (madisonsquarepark.org, 212-538-1884) —the vibrant center of Manhattan's Flatiron District, this park offers flourishing gardens, lush lawns and cultural programs for all ages. Located on 6.2 acres between 23rd and 26th streets and Fifth and Madison avenues, it is an oasis for those who live and work nearby. Enjoy eating at the Shake Shack (shakeshack.com) located in the park, a "green" food kiosk; you can get burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, beer, wine, and more!
